![]() A 'dream come true' for the Vinyl Junkie! Gone are the days when Club DJs and Radio Broadcasters were two different things. In the competitive
commercial radio environment of today being a personality is not enough. Dave VJ represents a new breed of radio DJ that handles both the music and the broadcasting complete with a big personality! All Dave ever wanted was to make ‘doh’ from being a DJ, so to play music on the air raised his game and changed things for the better. The Music Junkie who's addicted to TV! On Choice FM 5 days a week 'Dave at Lunchtimes'. 'Dave VJ' loves music, he's addicted to it and now he's sharing his passion with London 5 days a week at Lunchtimes. So, how did it all happen for DVJ? 1996: DAVE VJ was in the right place at the right time and was offered 'early breakfast' at Kiss FM broadcasting 5 days a week. A big change from the infamous weekly Kiss FM Rap Show, co-presenting. The Rap Show was Dave's first 'professional' paid radio work. From there on DAVE VJ got the bug for radio in a big way and developed his recognised talent for interviewing some of the biggest stars on the planet, such as: 1997: DAVE VJ won a best interview award for his work with Busta Rhymes and his crew Flipmode Squad. Doing the morning show gave Dave the opportunity to polish his skills at handling the equipment and software at which point DAVE VJ was asked to do the dance chart which included all forms of popular club music. Those experiences are what pushed DAVE VJ over the edge and onto the road of being a real broadcaster. 1998: Dave played at the Glastonbury Festival during the summer of this year and left Kiss FM for pastures new. 1999: Whilst working for a number of independent record labels Dave signed D'Bora to MWA whose track 'Honey' featured in the documentary about Tennis Champions, Serena and Venus Williams. 2000: After his experience working within the 'indie label scene' DAVE returned to the corporate world, using music and technology, working for www.peoplesound.com (the company behind those new CD giveaways in your daily paper). Dave travelled up and down the UK watching and listening to new bands helping them to get their music heard. This led to his involvement with a team who chose tracks for a UK film called Dog eat Dog, which starred Mel Blatt (All Saints) and Gary Kemp (brother of Martin Kemp, Eastenders). 2001: In the early part of this year DAVE got a call from one of his old producers at Kiss who had moved to Choice and asked him if he was interested in joining the station. Dave said yes and began with 2 overnight shows at the weekends. 2002: Dave started to cover for some of the more established Choice FM DJs on peak time shows giving him the chance to establish himself with the Choice audience. Dave says “I’m glad for the faith that Choice FM has in me and for the opportunities they have provided. This is my dream job, I get to talk and play my favourite music – and get paid for doing it.” 2003: Dave was offered 5 shows a week on 107.1 at lunchtimes and at drive times on Saturday on 96.9. DAVE VJ is in love with Hip Hop but that doesn't stop him from liking other music. "I like the fact that Hip hop is the musical warrior that embraces other styles, it has no wall around it to stop it from going where it wants to go. Hip Hop is why I'm so open minded." Dave's best moments from that time include DJ-ing at London's Hip-Hop hotspot, Subterrania, for the legendary sold-out Diamond D and Big L (now deceased) concert, roughing up the turntables and not making a single mistake, setting the place on fire and tearing the roof off that mutha... 2004: Since arriving at Choice the guests are still as high profile as ever and of late, Dave has interviewed Tweet, Brandy, Fat Joe, Sean Paul, Beverley Knight, Lumidee and Fatman Scoop amongst others. What keeps Dave going? The love of music! “Hearing a song that lets me lose my mind, the buzz I get from that is like nothing else on the planet.” On top of all that Dave VJ currently lectures for the number one DJ school in the Country, Point Blank, and plays for FreshCream @ Scala, Yum Yum @ NYT & DJ’s for some of the biggest names in Hip Hop & R’n’B when they come over to the UK at their concerts including Joe, Akon, Ludacris, Method Man & many more … Dave also does charity work when he can as helping people less fortunate is something that Dave wants to do, which is why he does it, not because he has to. In 2004 he joined forces with the British Council to take his abilities from London's thriving urban music scene to Uganda, Eastern Africa for an unbelievable, life changing and eye opening experience. You can now catch Dave's lunchtime show from Monday to Friday afternoons 12 midday - 3pm on Choice FM. | |
